A debugger for Claude Code tool calls: breakpoints, pause/continue/reject/step, a timeline, an inspector, Error Lens failure diagnosis and sanitized exports.
Notice
Early access. Mods need Claude Code 2.1.287 or later, and their API can change between releases without notice. Built and tested on 2.1.294. It installs from its own repository's marketplace, not from Anthropic's.
What it does
Permission rules decide whether a call may run. Claude DevTools lets you stop the agent at a point you choose, look at what it is about to do, and step through it: stop before any npm publish, whenever it touches src/auth/**, or on the next call after a failure.
Examples: /devtools-break command npm install pauses before any npm install. /bp command git push does the same, short. /devtools-break file src/auth/** pauses before reading or editing auth code. /devtools-break error Bash --action pause pauses the next call after a failed Bash call. /devtools opens the pane.
How it works
tool.check decides nothing: it passes every permission check on unchanged and reads the verdict to show it. tool.call records each call and holds it only when a breakpoint you set matches. command.run answers only its own commands (/devtools, /devtools-*, /bp, /bpl, /bpn, /bpc, /bpe). session.start and ui.render register the commands and draw the pane, the transcript gutter and the bar above the prompt.
It writes files only when you run /devtools-export or press Export: a .json (and .md) trace, by default in .claude-devtools/. Breakpoint rules and the debugger mode persist in the plugin store; the timeline stays in the session's memory.
Set up
Inside Claude Code, add the marketplace and install the mod. Then run /reload-plugins in an open session, or start a new one, and run /devtools. Run /plugin and look for devtools in the mods active line to check that it loaded.
/plugin marketplace add NMenzel/claude-devtools-mod/plugin install devtools@claude-devtools-modDownload the source
Clone the repository and load it from the folder. Nothing needs to be built, and it needs no npm packages. To run its tests, run claude plugin test in the clone.
